Capio Alva – digital obesity treatment that creates continuity between visits

Capio Alva uses Evira as part of its obesity treatment for children and adolescents. Following previous experience with digital home monitoring, its use was expanded to the clinics in Hagastaden, Medborgarplatsen, Sickla and Upplands Väsby, to combine specialist healthcare with closer follow-up and support in the family's daily life.

In brief

1

Four clinics

Evira was introduced at Capio Alva's paediatric and adolescent medicine clinics in Hagastaden, Medborgarplatsen, Sickla and Upplands Väsby.

2

A multidisciplinary team

The treatment combines Evira with Capio's team of paediatricians, paediatric nurses, and child psychologists.

3

Closer contact

Capio describes Evira as a complement that makes it possible to have closer contact with the family without more physical visits.

4

Treatment between visits

The family uses Evira at home while healthcare professionals can follow developments digitally.

Obesity treatment largely takes place at home

For children and adolescents with obesity, it is not enough for the treatment to work during a visit to the clinic. The changes that the treatment aims for largely occur in the child's and family's daily life – regarding food, activity, routines, and other behaviours.

This was an important reason why Capio Alva chose to supplement its existing obesity treatment within Region Stockholm with Evira. When the initiative was presented, obesity nurse Lotte Thorblad described Evira as a way to create closer contact without more physical meetings and give the family the opportunity to see changes in the treatment more quickly.

From individual visits to continuous follow-up

Even before the broader rollout, Capio already had experience using Evira in childhood obesity treatment. At the then-clinic at Zinkensdamm, staff described how patients could previously be seen several months apart. With Evira, the team could instead monitor developments between visits and maintain an ongoing digital dialogue with the family.

”Now we monitor the patient's development digitally, which makes it easier to keep track and show continuity between visits.”

Lower thresholds for change

Obesity treatment often requires long-term behavioural changes. Capio's experience was that the closer contact also changed the relationship between the family and healthcare.

”Evira has lowered the thresholds for being able to make changes.”

Better foundation for the team

Childhood obesity is often complex and requires more than just monitoring weight development. Capio's obesity treatment is therefore based on a team where paediatricians, paediatric nurses, and child psychologists, among others, contribute different perspectives.

When the patient's development can be monitored between visits, it becomes easier to detect when something changes and when additional support is needed. Capio's healthcare providers have, for example, described how the team could identify the need for psychological contact earlier instead of waiting until the next scheduled follow-up. The digital documentation also ensures that the family and healthcare staff have followed the same development leading up to the next contact.

Evira introduced at four Capio Alva clinics

In 2023, Capio decided to implement Evira at all four of its then-existing Capio Alva BUMMs: Hagastaden, Medborgarplatsen, Sickla, and Upplands Väsby. Evira was added to the existing obesity treatment that Capio provides on behalf of Region Stockholm, to which patients are referred, for example, by primary care centres, child health centres, and school health services.

The child uses a numberless, connected weighing scale. Measurements are automatically transferred to Evira and become available to the treatment team, while the family and healthcare can communicate during the course of the treatment. Treatment therefore does not need to pause between two physical visits – and can be conducted regardless of the distance to the clinic.

Health school and team around the family

Capio works with childhood obesity in structured treatment programmes where the family receives knowledge and support in groups and individually, together with a paediatrician, paediatric nurse, dietitian and psychologist. Who is treated at a specialist level is governed by Region Stockholm's care programme.

Evira is used within that programme. The digital follow-up allows the team to see how the treatment is working in everyday life between scheduled appointments, and can adapt interventions accordingly.

From the home weighing scale to the team's data

Home measurements are converted into a trend that takes into account the child's growth. The family sees the trend in the app, the team sees the same development in the care interface, and both parties work from the same picture at the next contact.

Treatment data from Swedish childhood obesity care is reported to the national quality register BORIS, and the National Board of Health and Welfare's guidelines state that treatment should be long-term and family-based. More frequent measurement points provide a broader basis for both treatment and follow-up.

From implementation to becoming part of the operations

Evira was broadly implemented within Capio Alva's BUMM operations in 2023, and its use has continued since then. In Capio's own operational and recruitment material from 2026, digital solutions like Evira are described as already being part of the operations – not as a temporary digitisation project.

Paediatricians, paediatric nurses, and child psychologists remain involved with the patient but gain a digital tool to monitor treatment even between clinic visits. Evira connects the time spent at the clinic with what happens at home, where a large part of childhood obesity treatment actually takes place.
